MANDI SCHWARTZ

Schwartz played minor hockey at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, Saskatchewan. She joined the Yale Bulldogs after graduating high school in 2006.

Schwartz was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in December 2008, during her junior year at Yale. She started treatment for her cancer in December 2008 and was able to briefly return to school and began practicing with the hockey team again in January 2010. In April 2010, she received word that her cancer had returned.

Doctors had decided that Schwartz’s best option for treatment would be either a cord blood or bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow drives did not result in a match for Schwartz, but doctors found a suitable donor from umbilical cord blood. In September 2010, Schwartz underwent the transplant in Seattle. Her cancer went into remission after the transplant, but returned again in December 2010.

On April 2, 2011, she entered a Regina hospital and died the following day. Schwartz was the daughter of Carol and the late Rick Schwartz and sister to brothers Jaden and Rylan.

2024 Pools Named after Alumni who helped start the Female Program

Jon Frape

Notre Dame has named each of the tournament pools after prominent alumni from the first five years of the girls' hockey program's existence (1990-1995).  The Schmalz pool honours the Schmalz family — former Notre Dame teacher, Greg Schmalz, started the girls hockey program back in 1990 with the assistance of Paul Loewen.  Greg's daughter, Erin, was on the first hockey team, and captained the girls hockey team in 1991-92.  Erin went on to compete at Cornell University, following in the footsteps of sisters Becky and Andie.

Carol Scheibel joined the Hounds in 1991, had a strong 4 year career with the Hounds and then went on to compete at the University of Calgary, and the University of Alberta.  Carol was also involved in the Hockey Canada National Team program for a number of years.  Delaney Collins also played from 1991-1995 and moved on to play at both Concordia University and the University of Alberta.  "DC" was part of the Hockey Canada National Team program for a number of years and is currently on the coaching staff for the Hungarian Womens' National team.  Kristy Lovering (Dupperrault) rounds out our group of honorees.  Kristy played with the Hounds first hockey team, and was our women's program's first captain.  Kristy has a daughter who also played in our female progarm at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame's Female hockey program has been well known for the past twenty plus years and it is because of these honourees who helped build the foundation that is the Notre Dame Female Hockey Program.
